Meals on Wheels: We are still in need of people to deliver Meals on Wheels, weekdays, October 22-November 2nd. You can sign up for individual days or a week (or both weeks if you love it). Please sign up at the Kiosk. We need a driver and a helper for each day. Need to pick up the meals at the Brookings Activity Center at 11:00am each day. THANKS for all who help!
Upcoming Milestone event: 5th Grade Holy Communion Retreat at NeSoDak is Friday-Saturday, October 19-20. Families should have received registration information in the mail. Praise Band Come, let’s lead worship together with praise songs. The next rehearsals will be on Thursday, October 18th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Give Thanks Sunday is October 21st: Join us for a special continental breakfast at 9:30am following our early worship emphasizing discovering your Spiritual Gifts. Please be sure to take the online spiritual gifts inventory under stewardship on www.ascensionbrookings.org, or pick up a paper copy on the Welcome Center table.
Sunday School Administrator: If you are interested in being an interim Sunday School Administrator, please contact Pastor Michael. This is a part-time PAID position.The complete job description is also hanging on the bulletin board facing the kiosk.
Don't Miss Adult Sunday School: In October Lois Haertel will lead 3 classes based on an intriguing book, “The Lost World of Adam and Eve”, by John Dalton. Then the Stewardship Board will present two sessions. November 18 and December 2, 9, and 23 will be an experiment of offering two separate topics at the same time. In the narthex Pastor Fred will lead discussion after a short Nooma video on spirituality. Pastor Michael will present “Spirituality for the Second Half of Life” in the usual adult classroom the first three dates. On December 23, Elaine Rietz will lead “Did the shepherds and wise men meet? A look at the gospel birth stories.” The adult class meets Sundays at 9:45 in the Conference Room, except for the extra narthex classes.
Fall Sunday School Service Project: This fall we will be filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child. It will be a friendly competition between classes (preschool through adult Sunday School) to see which class can collect the most boxes. A party will be held during the Sunday School hour for the winning class. Boxes and more information will be available in the Gathering Area soon. Boxes must be returned no later than November 18th.
ATTENTION YOUTH!!! Need a place to have fun and get some schoolwork done? Join us after school on Wednesdays, until 6:00pm, for a time of study (some help available) before a time of games, activities, fellowship and fun. Grab a participation form in the Welcome area for more details. Adults with expertise in various areas are invited to help the youth in their studies and join in the fun. Sunday School Offering: Fall Sunday School monetary offering will be designated for Project Joy. Project Joy is a charitable, non-profit organization, dedicated to providing children and families living in Brookings County, who are in need, an opportunity to receive holiday gifts through the generous donations of individuals, businesses, and organizations.
Book Group Meeting: At our dinner last week we decided to conduct our future meetings at Mama Mia’s restaurant on the fourth Wednesday of each month, with the exception of November being the fifth Wednesday and no meeting in December. We will meet for dinner at 6:00. If you aren’t able to come for dinner, come later for dessert and discussion/fellowship. (We may meet just for dessert during Lent since this would conflict with the Lenten service.) We plan to talk about the book, Call the Midwife. The PBS show also counts as reading the book J. The next several meeting dates planned are October 24, November 28, January 23, February 27, & March 27.
Feeding Brookings is a free food distribution for those in need that takes place at Ascension from 4:00-5:00pm each Thursday. OCTOBER ITEMS OF THE MONTH: Hearty Soup! If you still have extra garden produce, you are encouraged to bring it. HYGIENE ITEMS: toilet paper, bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste Volunteers are always needed.
